Indian quartz market

The Indian Quartz market is dominated by organized players which constitute for around 80 per cent and the remaining 20 per cent is operated under the unorganized sector. The current size of the Indian quartz market is just over INR 550 crore with Classic Marble Company (CMC)’s brand KalingaStone leading the market in this segment.

 

Quartz is a common stone and is available across the world in abundance. But to name a few, India, Africa, Brazil and Turkey are known quality sources for quartz.

 

Gujarat and Rajasthan are the manufacturing hubs for Quartz stone industry and contribute significantly to exports. The demand for quartz stone broken up region-wise shows 35% demand in the West, 32% in the South, 28% in the North and a mere 5% in the East. The domestic market is rapidly expanding however, at present quartz is mostly used in five-star hotels and luxury homes.The Quartz is used mostly in airports, luxury hotels and resorts, hospitals and malls.

 

CMC’s KalingaStone quartz is manufactured at its state of the art factory in Silvassa which is spread across 200,000 sq. m.

 

The manufacturing facility enables our research team to innovate and introduce exclusive colours and patterns in the quartz category that are otherwise found in exotic granite. Technology not only facilitates customization of the nature-inspired designs in the

The newest quartz line is created using state of the art technology featuring a full automated production line, starting from feeding the raw material to the stacking of the slabs. The automated production line is capable of producing slabs in super jumbo dimension of 3300 X 2000 mm (in addition to the regular size)

 

The factory currently produces 15 million sq.ft of quartz per annum

 

Challenges associated with the general/post-Covid quartz industry

 

The enforced lockdown due to Covid-19 has affected many businesses. Many sectors remained completely shut including infrastructure and construction which did impact our industry. The demand has reduced from some of our major buyers including hotels and other commercial establishments including offices and malls. Now that businesses are slowly re-opening, it will be some time before we will realise the challenges in the Quartz or even generally, the Stones industry.

 

In the luxury home segment, quite a few customers have begun some or the other home- improvement activity. As people have been spending more time in their homes, many have felt the urge for makeovers. We expect the demand for natural as well as engineered stones to grow back to the pre-lockdown levels in 3 to 6 months, at least in residential projects.

Impact of the COVID-19 on your industry and the hospitality industry

The pandemic has affected everyone and our industry too has been impacted severely. Even before the nationwide lockdown was imposed, the real estate sector and thus construction, was performing poorly and two months into it, the sector has come to a complete standstill. Today, as we know, the hospitality sector is one of the worst impacted and with non- functional hotels and restaurants as well as no new projects we too have become dormant in this vertical.

 

The pandemic has disrupted supply chain and since the sector works on ground, there is no other alternative but to wait it out. The major issue with dealing with the lockdown as a consequence of the pandemic is bearing the costs. The idling inventory, the shut down operations and plant, and the people who are dependent on wages for sustaining their livelihoods are the primary aspects that factor in. Our industry which is inclusive of the construction sector employs over 49 million people. CMC employs over 1000 people and while we have tried to accommodate as many in WFH, a majority of our employees do not have the option. Also there is another issue now with a quite a few of our labourers having gone back to their homes and so when we do resume operations, we will be faced with a shortage of manpower. This and capital are most probably going to be in short supply once the lockdown ends. We plan to resume operations in limited capacity and when the ball starts rolling, we will keep increasing the productivity.

 

We have begun the process of strengthening safety and practicing procedures to follow at the plant and in the office premise. During these months CMC conducted online meetings and webinars for instilling confidence in its people. We held strategic meetings across management and staff on vendor management and customers, we also continued with relationship building with our clients and worked on new designs that we could offer the market once we resume activities. We have charted a plan outlining guidelines for maintaining business continuity and operations. As mentioned earlier, we are making concerted efforts for becoming digitally proficient for working remotely which will help us in interacting with our stakeholders abroad as well as for integrating it in our daily work culture.

Façade applications offered by CMC

KalingaStone marble – This is our flagship product which is amongst the most popular of all  others. An engineered product, KalingaStone marble is used for façade applications for all  kinds of buildings. The product is light, durable, easy in maintenance and can be installed  with simple fixtures.

Kalesinterflex – This is a new generation porcelain product and is one of the most popular  choices in façade applications for tall structures. The porcelain slabs are extremely light,  tough, durable, resistant to fire, water and dust, and hence are easy to maintain. The  distinguishing aspect of this product is the flexibility radius of 5.5m, allowing for the large  slabs to be installed on concave and convex surfaces. The products are rated very high for  fire resistance, fungi protection and resistant to scratch or crack, among other features.

Sustainability is the latest demand in façades with more and more architects wanting to  deliver the best solutions to their clients. Function and form are equally important and  materials that look good as well as last are the choice for today’s buildings. Our  Kalesinterflex range in porcelain tiles is the best in the world and which meet the  aforementioned criteria.

CMC’s Kalesinterflex has a 5.5m range of flex that allows installation of the slab over  concave and convex surfaces. The light weight slabs, with thicknesses of either 3mm or  5mm makes handling easy and ideal for wall cladding and façade applications, especially in  tall structures.

Kalesinterflex also offers translucent porcelain slabs that are suitable for exterior cladding  applications. Kinetic façades are the latest in installation systems. The system allows façade  panels to be oriented in different directions on the building surface. The panels are pivoted  on a mechanical system which allows it to incline on the surface. The building façade  become a dynamic surface which is done primarily to allow regulated entry of natural light

and wind. This reduces the dependency on the HVAC system and saves energy  consumption. Presently it is being adopted in many European countries, but in India it is still  in its nascent stages.

Metallic tones in matt finish are the trending in façade designs. More and more buildings  are being skins that appear singular and seamless which means that the façade panels need  to be in the largest dimensions to minimise the breaks in installation. Again our  Kalesinterflex range offers the largest and the slimmest possible porcelain slabs for façade  applications. The largest dimension available in this product range is 3000 x 1000mm.

Architects prefer to use lightweight materials in exterior claddings that are aesthetically  pleasing and are sustainable. Large size porcelain slabs, high pressure laminates, Aluminium  Composite Panels (ACP) and metal claddings are trending in the Indian market.

Modern buildings are environment conscious and architects continue to experiment with  designs to make buildings both eco-friendly and innovative. The preference is given to green  products that are more sustainable, light weight and effective for tropical weather.

Façades offer making the building aesthetically beautiful while also offering exteriors the  protection that a building needs. A building façade built with right type of material reduces  its energy consumption, improves natural lighting and conducts the flow of air efficiently.  Buildings are rated or LEED certified based on parameters that contribute towards them  being eco-friendly.
